Sandwich Griller

Belonged to Iona Herring

These sandwich grillers, also called pie irons, were a convenient way to make toasted foods. Although they aren’t widely used today, they can still be seen around camping sights thanks to their simplicity and portability. The design allows one to cook and seal a pie or sandwich over any open flame. Fruits, meats, and cheeses are all commonly used fillings.

Their construction consists of two iron pans hinged together, with protective plastic grips on the handles to prevent hand burns. While many toasted sandwich makers have come and gone over the years, this particular brand, Toas-Tite, was established in 1949 and their models are still sold today.

This video from the Amazon Marketplace demonstrates how to use this particular pie iron.
